828 Mega Mums By Starla — Our Story

“Here, Mom. I know you can do this.”

The first homecoming mum Starla built for her own grandchild in San Angelo, Texas.
The one that started it all The mum Starla stayed up building for her own grandbabies, a few weeks before the game.

I’d spent years making all kinds of things, but never a homecoming mum. Caleb didn’t hesitate for a second.

“Here, Mom. I know you can do this.”

That was all he said.

Just a handful of words, spoken a few short weeks before my grandkids’ very first homecoming. Yet hidden within that simple sentence was the beginning of something none of us could have imagined. In that moment—before the first ribbon was cut, the first braid was woven, or the first flower was placed—828 Mega Mums By Starla was quietly coming to life.

When your child looks at you with such unwavering confidence and asks you to make something extraordinary for your grandbabies, you do not waste time explaining all the reasons you might fail.

You find a way.

I knew absolutely nothing about constructing a homecoming mum. I did not understand the ribbons, the braids, the layers, or the countless delicate details that transform a collection of materials into a magnificent homecoming tradition. I had no experience to guide me and no certainty that my hands could create what my heart envisioned.

But I knew how deeply I loved those children.

And love, as it turns out, is more than enough to begin.

I labored over every ribbon as though the entire creation depended upon it. I studied every color, questioned every placement, and agonized over details so small that no one else might ever notice them. There was no perfect blueprint spread before me, no elegant set of instructions promising that everything would come together exactly as I hoped.

There was only an idea, a table filled with ribbons and decorations—and my determination to make something worthy of my grandkids.

So I began the only way I knew how: one layer, one braid, and one careful decision at a time.

Some pieces seemed to fall effortlessly into place, almost as though they had been waiting all along for my hands to discover where they belonged. Others unraveled before my eyes. Braids had to be undone. Ribbons had to be removed. Entire sections I had spent hours creating were taken apart and started again.

There were moments of frustration, moments of doubt, and moments when I wondered whether I had taken on far more than I could manage.

But I kept going.

Those first mums were not merely homecoming accessories. They were gifts for my grandkids, and I poured every ounce of myself into them. Every flower was chosen with care. Every ribbon carried intention. Every sparkling detail—whether anyone else noticed it or not—held a piece of my heart.

And then I saw my grandkids wearing them.

For a moment, I could scarcely hold back the tears.

Naturally, my eyes still found every tiny imperfection I had worried over and every detail that had cost me sleep. That part of me will probably never change. But what I remember most is the extraordinary pride that rose within me as I watched them stand there smiling—beaming beneath the glorious weight of all those flowers, ribbons, sparkling details, and immeasurable love.

In that moment, every mistake, every anxious thought, and every painstaking hour became worthwhile.

And I knew, with absolute certainty, that I wanted to do it all over again.

So I did.

With every new homecoming came another mum, another garter, and another opportunity to create something unforgettable for my grandkids. Season after season, I watched them proudly wear pieces I had designed and assembled with my own two hands.

Then, one day, another mother asked whether I could make something for her child.

Soon, another family asked.

And then another.

One order became two. Two became several. Several became more than I had ever expected. Slowly and almost imperceptibly, the labor of love that began at my own kitchen table started reaching other families, other students, and other treasured homecoming memories.

What began as a gift for my grandkids blossomed into 828 Mega Mums By Starla.

I have always been a crafter. I have always felt most at home when something beautiful is taking shape beneath my fingertips—when imagination becomes tangible and ordinary materials are transformed into something meaningful.

Perhaps that is why Caleb believed in me so completely, even when I was still uncertain of myself.

He knew I had never made a homecoming mum before. But he also knew me. He knew that once I began, I would remain stubborn, steady, and determined until I found a way to bring the vision to life. He saw a gift in me before I understood where that gift might lead.

I am not sure Caleb fully realized what he set in motion that day, but I certainly do.

His faith in me gave me the courage to step beyond what I already knew. His encouragement opened the door for me to transform a lifelong love of crafting into a business that brings me more joy than I ever could have anticipated.

Today, every mum and garter I create carries the same devotion I poured into those very first pieces. Each one is designed to celebrate a student, honor a cherished tradition, and become part of a memory that families will hold dear long after the final ribbon has stopped swaying.

Because to me, these creations have never been merely ribbons and flowers.

They are celebrations made visible.

They are pride fashioned by hand.

They are love, joy, tradition, and memory—woven together one exquisite detail at a time.

Looking back now, I believe the Lord knew precisely what He was doing when He used my son’s simple words to gently guide me toward something I was meant to discover. What felt like an unexpected challenge became a calling, a business, and a beautiful new chapter in my life.

Caleb, thank you—for believing in me before I believed in myself, for encouraging me to try, and for setting a quiet dream into motion with one unforgettable sentence.

Without you, 828 Mega Mums By Starla might never have existed.

You were right, son.

I could do it.

— Starla

Where the name comes from

The 828 comes from Romans 8:28

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 (ESV)

It’s the verse I’ve leaned on for a long time. It doesn’t say the hard times won’t come. It says Jesus doesn’t waste them, that even what’s meant to harm us, He works together for good.

I’ve lived long enough to see it. The seasons I would have skipped if it had been up to me are the ones I can look back on now and see the most good came out of. I couldn’t see any of that while I was in them.

So I put it right in the name. That way it’s in front of me every day, reminding me He’s working all of this together for good, for those who love Him.

How your mum actually gets made

From your school colors to game day

01

I start with the person, not the product

School, colors, mascot, name, class year, and the activities that actually matter — band, cheer, drill team, football, FFA and livestock, choir, theater, ROTC, whatever they love.

02

I design the layout

Every mum gets planned as one balanced design, so the shape reads clearly and nothing fights with anything else. That’s the part most people don’t realize takes the longest.

03

I build the braids and ribbon work

This is the part that takes real time, and it’s all mine. Every braid is made by hand, one strand at a time — the loops, the streamers, the specialty ribbons, and the lettered ribbons that hang down the front. I set the lengths so they fall right on the person wearing it, and I keep the braids even and the loops mirrored so the whole thing hangs straight instead of pulling to one side.

04

Then the layering

Flowers, ribbon skirt, braids, specialty ribbons, cutouts, boa, bells, bling, lights — layered in order, all by hand. Every piece gets secured as it goes on, because this thing has to survive a full night of hugs, hallways, and a football game.

05

Final check and finish

Every name and class year gets read twice, the weight gets balanced, the strap is adjusted to the person wearing it, and it’s finished before game day.

My standards

What I promise every family who orders from me

  • You’ll talk to me, not a form. Message or text me anytime with a question, even before you order.
  • No mum vocabulary required. Tell me the school, the colors, and who it’s for. I’ll handle the rest.
  • Names and years get checked twice. Spelling, class year, colors, and activities are confirmed before anything gets cut.
  • Nothing leaves here unfinished. Every mum is inspected, balanced, and fitted before it goes out the door.
  • Built to be a keepsake. These get hung on a bedroom wall for years. I build them to hold up to that.
  • Ordering late? Ask me anyway. Even when everyone else is booked, I’ll look for a way to make it work — and I’ll stay up late to get it done. If your homecoming is days away, message me before you assume it’s too late. See homecoming dates →

Who I make mums for

Traditional Mums →

Seniors

The last one, and usually the biggest — white and gold or white and silver, the class year, and four years of activities worked into one design.

Senior & Mega Mums →

Shape people

Texas, a paw, a boot, a heart, a crown, a megaphone, your mascot — cut into the actual backer, not stuck on top of it.

Custom-Shape Mega Mums →

The guys

Garters from classic to mega. Same tradition, same handwork, built on an armband.

Homecoming Garters →

Couples & friend groups

Ordering as a set is simple — the order form asks whether your order needs to match somebody else’s. Say yes and tell me whose, and I’ll design the mum and the garter side by side from the very first ribbon, so they read as a pair in every picture instead of two separate orders that happen to share a color.

Band, cheer, drill team, FFA & livestock, ROTC, theater, choir

Whatever they pour their year into gets worked into the design. That’s usually the part they remember.

About 828

Questions families ask before they order

Who makes the mums, what 828 means, where we’re based, how long we’ve been doing this, and how to reach Starla.

Who makes 828 Mega Mums?

Every 828 homecoming mum and garter is designed and handmade by Starla in San Angelo, Texas. She plans each design, layers the flowers and ribbons, braids and letters each piece, and inspects and fits it before it goes out. Her husband Gregg cuts the personalized cardstock cutouts on every package, and cuts and reinforces every custom backer shape. 828 Mega Mums by Starla is a family-owned business — there’s no factory and no outside crew.

What does 828 mean in 828 Mega Mums by Starla?

The 828 comes from Romans 8:28 — “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” It’s the verse behind the business name, and it’s why a Bible-verse cutout is an option on every mum Starla builds.

Where is 828 Mega Mums by Starla located?

828 Mega Mums by Starla is based in San Angelo, Texas, and serves the Concho Valley, the Big Country around Abilene, and the Permian Basin around Midland and Odessa. Local pickup is in San Angelo, delivery is available nearby, regional drop-offs are arranged a few times each season, and mums ship anywhere in Texas.

How long has Starla been making homecoming mums?

Starla made her very first mum for her own grandbaby, and 828 Mega Mums by Starla has been a business since 2019 — the year orders started coming from families she’d never met. She’s built mums every homecoming season since, and this fall makes eight.

Are 828 mums handmade or store-bought?

Handmade, one at a time. Every 828 mum and garter is designed and built by hand in San Angelo, Texas — the braids and ribbon work are made by hand, the cutouts are custom-designed and cut in layers for each order, the backers are cut and reinforced in the shop, and nothing is assembled from a kit or ordered in and re-labeled.

Is 828 Mega Mums a one-person shop?

Almost. Starla designs and builds every mum and garter herself, and her husband Gregg cuts every personalized cutout and custom shape in their San Angelo shop. There’s no factory and no outside crew — when you message 828, you’re talking to the person building your mum.

What schools do you make homecoming mums for?

828 Mega Mums by Starla builds for schools all across the Concho Valley, the Big Country around Abilene, and the Permian Basin around Midland and Odessa — and ships anywhere in Texas, so your school doesn’t have to be on a list. Just ask; Starla regularly builds for schools she hasn’t worked with before.

Can I order individual cutouts or LED light-up cutouts?

Yes — new this season. Along with the layered cutouts included on every mum and garter package, 828 is offering individual double- and triple-layer custom cardstock cutouts and LED light-up cutouts on their own. Text Starla with the name, activity, year, mascot, or wording you want and she’ll confirm sizing and price.

Do you have a shop I can visit?

There’s no public storefront and no walk-in hours — 828 Mega Mums by Starla is a working home studio in San Angelo, Texas. Plenty of families do pick up their finished mums and garters here, and local delivery is available nearby, but every visit is by arrangement. Text or call (325) 304-3556 and Starla will set a pickup time that works for both of you.

Can I talk to Starla before I order?

Yes. A consultation isn’t required, but Starla is glad to help you figure out size, colors, and budget before you order anything. You can leave a message any time of day — text or call (325) 304-3556 with the school, the colors, and who it’s for, and she usually replies within minutes.
